Maunga o te Kitenga
A Playground of Discovery at Newmarket Westfield

Hellospace NZ in collaboration with Flox NZ, Field Craft NZ & Oasis Interiors

A Playground That Goes Beyond the Slide

Creating a memorable play space takes more than just placing a slide and calling it a day. For Newmarket Westfield, Bridget from Hellospace NZ led a design process rooted in connection, community, and curiosity.
Positioned right next to the Amore Gelato kiosk (also designed by Hellospace), this play space was created with both children and parents in mind. Strategic layout choices included:

  • Clear sightlines between the seating, coffee spots, and play area

  • Generous pram parking

  • Plenty of room for kids to run, climb, and discover freely

Inspired by the Mountains

Named Maunga o te Kitenga – or Mountain of Discovery – this playground draws inspiration from the dramatic mountain ranges that surround Auckland. Each design element reflects a spirit of adventure, encouraging kids to explore, imagine, and engage with their surroundings.

Play with Purpose

This space isn’t just beautiful – it’s smart too. The Connect Four wall, a standout feature, was created to encourage interaction, strategy, and hands-on play. It embodies Hellospace’s belief that playgrounds should be designed for:

  • Interaction

  • Experience

  • Fun

Built for Real Kids

Every element in this space was selected with children’s safety and creativity in mind. Materials are:

  • Durable and hardy

  • Made from safe, eco-friendly components

  • Perfectly suited to high-energy play and curious hands

A Place to Play, Pause, and Connect

From toddlers to tired parents, Maunga o te Kitenga invites everyone to pause, play, and enjoy. It’s more than a playground – it’s a thoughtfully designed experience that adds heart to the Newmarket Westfield precinct.
